Introduction

by outside students at the University of Miami

Throughout the course of the semester, we had the unique opportunity of participating in a letter exchange with individuals on the inside of Everglades Correctional Facility. This was an incredibly educational and inspirational experience for all of us, but particularly for those of us sitting in a University of Miami classroom.

We started this exchange by introducing ourselves to our partners so that we had an idea of who we were talking to, and from there we were given shared prompts on common readings that we would respond to back and forth. The communication grew. Our knowledge and friendships grew.

In wrapping up this exchange we are now left with the question: What now? Prison Reform? Restorative Justice? Prison Abolition? We hope that by exploring the many projects represented on this page, you will become enlightened and touched by letters of hope and shared humanity.

A humanity that leaves us all with a sense of empowerment.
