In partnership with the Frederick Douglass Project for Justice, Exchange for Change brings community members inside Florida’s correctional facilities to meet, listen, and converse with incarcerated students.

About Prison Visits

Throughout the year, Exchange for Change opens the doors to two Florida correctional facilities: Everglades Correctional Institution (men’s) and Homestead Correctional Institution (women’s). Up to 15 community members join each session for a mix of large and small group conversations with incarcerated students. No background, credentials, or prior experience is needed.

Everglades Correctional Institution ~30 min from downtown Miami
Homestead Correctional Institution ~75 min south of downtown Miami

Schedule

Prison visits run from January through May and from September through December.

What to Expect

Prison visits last approximately two hours. You will be welcomed by E4C staff and given a brief orientation before entering the facility. Inside, small and large group conversations take place in a structured setting that fosters a greater understanding of the incarcerated experience. What to wear, what to bring, and what to expect at check-in will all be covered in your confirmation email after you sign up.

A prison visit changes how you see things. Many visitors describe it as one of the most meaningful experiences of their lives.

A prison visit is a powerful way to create community, whether it’s for your company colleagues, academic associates, nonprofit employees, or other groups looking to give back. You arrive as a group, but the experience is highly personal. One-on-one conversations with an incarcerated student allow for real, honest dialogue that can leave you changed in a way you could not have foreseen.
