I Love A Martin Luther King Day Parade

The high steppers and baton twirlers

the bump bump bump of marching bands

Do get my heart racing. Veterans ride

perched on show-worthy convertible cars

waving to the community,

while granny brigades in fancy hats

joy dance down the street.

Excited chatter from Miami girls

swirls around the Day Room as they

point out their alma maters

Homestead and South Dade High School.

Street vendors show off fresh meat pasties

and fluff cotton candy to the camera.

It's all so close.

If only I could step through the TV

screen and out of this prison. Rejoin and

rejoice with the people.

I have a dream.
