Kitchen Lessons

My father is making
spaghetti. Thick tomatoes
meat sauce with a waft of
garlic & basil rising from a
cast iron frying pan.

Never a pot, my father only
cooks using frying pans.
He cooks three meals: egg, potato,
sausage jumble, spaghetti, and steak.

With mother I only learned to make
ambrosia. Dessert of the gods sliced
blood oranges, fresh pineapple crushed,
shaved coconut, sliced bananas, cherries.

The substance along with the dreams.

Today I am stirring sliced apples, quartered
oranges, & mashed banana into brown sugar
oatmeal for microwave cookie bars.
I will wait for it to set while I roll up
spiral tuna sandwiches in tortillas.

Still practicing my parents
savory and sweet lessons.
