Between You and Me on Martin Luther King Day
Listening to the King this morning in the
frigid prison dining hall as he addressed
crowds gathered on the mall calling
dreams and freedom into existence.
An officer screams into my face he
cannot drown the voice of of hope
my ear is tuned. No need to wear
uniforms today you in grey and me in blue.
No more shackles for wrist or ankle
no more barbed wire, no walls
no more prisons between us.
No more cruel words spoken
no more us versus you.
no more separation of frozen hearts.
This is the day of change and,
I want to add, as the sun shines
on both of our heads the lock click
open of this prison gate is the dream.
